The council seeks a development partner to build homes in the Estates Buildings in Huddersfield and take on the freehold when complete [Deadline 29 September]
Kirklees Council is seeking market feedback from developers on the residential conversion and sale of the Estate Buildings, a Grade II* listed building of local historical interest in a prime location within Huddersfield Town Centre.
Set in the key location at Station Gateway and town centre of Huddersfield, the building is seeking a qualified and experienced organisation to complete the overhaul to a residential building and "help bring the building back to life."
The building sits off St. George’s Square and dates back to the 1800s. Previously used as office space, the building designed by local architect William Henry Crossland is now sitting empty.
The council has released £1.25m of funding to prepare the building for future redevelopment, but the council must have a contract in place to deliver homes on site by 31 March 2028 or the funding will have to be repaid, according to a BBC report in January 2025.
The council had entered into an agreement with Thirteen Group to deliver social housing at the site, however the provider has since withdrawn from the project.
The council now seeks a development partner to take on the freehold once construction is complete.
A market feedback questionnaire is available to complete on the tendering portal. Responses must be submitted via the YORTender portal.
