TfL seeks expertise for the Bakerloo Line upgrade and infrastructure works

In 2024, TfL carried out preliminary market engagement for the Bakerloo Line Upgrade and have now restarted the programme to finalise the planned procurement.

It has been established that the Bakerloo Line Extension, providing travel further South, can only go ahead after the Bakerloo Line Upgrade following reliability issues with the current rolling stock.

The 72 trains currently running on the Bakerloo line were introduced in 1972 and are the oldest stock on the underground lines. Significant delays and risks are posed by this fleet so Stage 1 of the upgrade will see the implementation of new rolling stock.

As part of this, the line’s infrastructure will be modified to make better use of the tunnels. The new fleet and improvements will see 10% capacity increase and faster travel times across Stage 1 and 2 of the works.

Improvements to the power lines and tracks are to be done to establish this new fleet. Stage 1 includes a further scope of works across the line to include reconstruction of the Depot and expansion of the park area.

A new Driver’s Training Facility will also be formed from adaptation of existing facilities.
