Tamworth council seeks developer feedback on Gungate regeneration project

The Gungate regeneration project hopes to launch in 2026 and Tamworth Borough Council is initiating soft market testing to understand interest in the mixed-use opportunity.

 

Since being purchased by Tamworth Borough Council in 2018, the 2.76 acre site has been used as a temporary car park which currently interrupts the connectivity between the town centre and railway station.

 

Many of the buildings surrounding the site are now vacant with these underutilised spaces set out as key opportunities in the Tamworth Town Centre Plan 2025.

 

At the centre of the Gungate Regeneration Quarter, the site plays a vital role in becoming a hub for the adjacent riverside, residential and retail zones.

 

Prior feasibility studies have established that leisure and experienced are necessary to boost the declining high street. The goal is to prompt use day and night across the area.

 

The site is allocated for housing in the Tamworth Local Plan which, alongside mixed-used businesses and enhanced public realm, should form a pedestrian line from the town centre to railway.

 

The wider regeneration has been earmarked for retirement living, workspaces, medical services and a multi-storey car park.

 

Consideration of the St Editha’s Church should be considered as a historic part of Tamworth’s skyline.
