The Developer’s Festival of Place Bytesize event with Dr. Christina Malathouni, architectural historian and lecturer, Liverpool School of Architecture on the past and future of living in flats, took place on 15 July.

How can our flats accommodate new functions such as work, and changing needs over our lifetime? How can we realise the potential of flats to be complete homes? What can the flat accommodate, and what must take place outside?

Malathouni is an architect and architectural historian with extensive experience in the heritage sector, specialising in Modernist and Brutalist architectural heritage. She currently researches historical perspectives of 20th-century medical architecture and is writing a book entitled Public Mental Health Facilities in Post-War Britain (1948-1973) (Routledge).

Her 30 minute talk was followed by a Q&A session for approximately 20 minutes, followed by an optional 20-minute breakout session.

Malathouni will discuss the design of flats from a health and wellbeing perspective, in the context of the pandemic, and in the wider historical ambition to create healthy post-war homes. Malathouni will also address ideas of heritage and identity, in the context of the Black Lives Matter protests.

Bytesize offers a free taste of the major annual event, Festival of Place, now scheduled for 13 November, 2020.
